Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
A Local PTA Goes Green!

Mill Road PTA Water Bottle

The Green Committee of the Mill Road PTA seeks a "waste free lunch".  The Red Hook, NY PTA had a big idea and acted on it.  To reduce the use of disposable water bottles, juice boxes and disposable plastic bags, they ordered 12-ounce re-usable water bottles and 'wrap-n-mats.'

Items are being sold at cost and not as a fund raiser.  The $5 water bottles have the PTA logo and are BPA-free.  The wrap-n-mats are $3 and double as a place mat.  The PTA will be selling the bottles and mats at upcoming school events.

To better deal with food waste, the fifth graders will be sending their leftovers to Awesome Farm where the food scraps will be composted and provide food for chickens.  The K-2  students will be piloting a program to bring their food scraps to a small compost tumbler that will make soil for use on the school grounds.

These new initiatives for 2008-09 build upon last year's success in implementing building-wide recycling of both paper and bottles/plastics.
